MIRTHE hosts 2007 Summer REUs and RETs

The MIRTHE Center sponsored fourteen undergraduate students from around the country in its Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) and three Research Experience for Teachers (RET) programs this summer. The participants spent from six to nine weeks conducting research on mid-infrared spectroscopy and engineering that complemented current research projects of the Center.

Faculty opened their labs at several MIRTHE partner institutions to these RETs and REUs, and guided students in work on specific projects.  The faculty, along with their graduate students, served as mentors throughout the program.
The REU students worked on projects at Princeton University, Rice University, Texas A&M University (TAMU), The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and University of  Maryland – Baltimore County (UMBC).  The RETs were located at Princeton University, UMBC and at Rice University.  All students and teachers participated in weekly teleconference calls and on-line training sessions. They had the opportunity to meet with each other, present their research, and network at the Summer Workshop at the end of the program at Princeton University.

MIRTHE staff will conduct regular follow-ups with REU and RET students to track the impact and benefits of the programs on participants, and to enhance the experience in future years.  Information and applications for next year’s REU and RET are now available on MIRTHE’s website (see www.mirthecenter.org).
