About 100 undergraduate , graduate and high school students from across the U.S. came to MIRTHE for 2 months intensive summer 2010 program. The students, placed at six MIRTHE Universities are immersed in local research teams and conduct original and hands-on laboratory work. Activities include, besides original, cutting-edge, laboratory-based research, weekly conference calls and web-based training sessions with students at other MIRTHE universities, short courses offering insights into a wide range of research fields, informal social gatherings providing opportunities to network and to learn, and field trips to industrial and government laboratories in the area. On their first field trip students visited Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, who works with collaborators across the globe to develop fusion as an energy source for the world, and conducts research along the broad frontier of plasma science and technology. On their next trip, MIRTHE students visited MIRTHE industrial partner Airliquide – worldwide leader in gases for industry, health and the environment. After the presentation given by one of the Airliquide scientists, students had a chance to visit laboratories and listen about exciting research projects being performed at the newly opened Research and Technology Center. On the last field trip of this summer program students were hosted by Horiba Jobin Yvon in Edison, NJ where they manufacture and design fluorescence forensics, gratings, and optical spectroscopy. After the presentation given by Dr. Salvatore H. Atzeni, Vice President, Optical Spectroscopy Division Chief Technology Officer at Horiba students visited Horiba’s research laboratories.
