MIRTHE at Photonics West 2010

MIRTHE Booth at Photonics West Exhibition Garners Strong Interest
By Bernadeta Wysocka, MIRTHE Industrial Liaison

This year MIRTHE for the first time exhibited at Photonics West Conference in San Francisco, CA, on January 26-28, 2010. Photonics West is one of the biggest photonics, laser, and biomedical optics conference events, which brings thousands of exhibitors and visitors every year from all over the world. MIRTHE’s presence at this conference turned out to be a very successful appearance. We experienced strong interest – as evidenced by the heavy traffic at our booth – that was also enhanced by the fact that we were displaying a CO2 sensor for atmospheric monitoring. The portable, compact, wireless CO2 sensor attracted lots of conference visitors, who stopped the booth asking questions. Clinton Smith (PhD student) and Stephen So (post-doctoral fellow) from Prof. Gerard Wysocki group who have been working on this development were demonstrating the sensor’s performance and its potential interest to industry, researchers, scientists, students, national laboratories and government representative, as well as the investment community. It was an excellent opportunity to present new technology developed in the lab that is ready to be moved into the commercial market and used in a real-world application.

On Wednesday night, MIRTHE hosted a networking dinner meeting for our industry members, faculty and students. Prof. Claire Gmachl MIRTHE Center director briefly summarized recent MIRTHE activities and discussed key activities that have been planned for the next few months; i.e., IAB/SAB teleconference meeting and SWOT analysis scheduled on February 17, as well as the upcoming March 9-10 NSF annual site visit. Over 30 MIRTHE industry members, faculty and students gathered together and enjoyed an evening talking and exchanging recent research results, possibilities of joint proposals and collaborations, as well as opportunities of hosting MIRTHE student internships at their companies or government labs. We look forward to continuing our strong presence at Photonics West next year hopefully with new exciting developments and activities. We invite you to visit us at the exhibit floor at Pittcon Conference in Orlando, FL, March 1-4, 2010 and at the CLEO/QELS Conference in San Jose, CA, May 18-20, 2010.
