MIRTHE at CLEO 2010 Conference & Exhibition

By Bernadeta Wysocka, MIRTHE Industrial Liaison

50 posters and talks presented and contributed by MIRTHE’s associated faculty and students proved again our strong presence at CLEO this year in San Jose, CA, May 16-21, 2010.

MIRTHE, for a 3rd time, exhibited at CLEO with a great success. Every year CLEO gathers thousands of exhibitors and visitors from all over the world who are seeking for newest highlights in optics and laser industry. We experienced strong interest at the booth that was also enhanced by the fact that we were displaying a CO2 sensor for atmospheric monitoring. The portable, compact, wireless CO2 sensor attracted lots of conference visitors, who

stopped by the booth asking questions. It was an excellent opportunity to present new technology developed in the lab that is ready to be moved into the commercial market and used in a real-world application.

The MIRTHE booth, which was attracting potential industry partners, also served as a communication center for existing industry members, faculty and students. A strong group of MIRTHE undergraduate and graduate students who presented their research work at the conference were interacting with industry on the exhibit floor.

On Tuesday, MIRTHE hosted a networking lunch meeting for the industry members, faculty and students. Prof. Claire Gmachl, MIRTHE Center director, summarized recent MIRTHE activities and discussed key activities that have been planned for the next few months. About 60 MIRTHE industry members, faculty and students gathered together and enjoyed sharing ideas, talking and exchanging recent research results, and possibilities of joint proposals and collaborations.

Next day, on Wednesday morning, MIRTHE conducted a Roadmapping meeting with the industry members. Peter Schram summarized the MIRTHE Roadmap initiative which was followed by a very interesting discussion among industry representatives who gave important feedback and their suggestions to the existing document. The final version of the MIRTHE Roadmap will be available for the members in the near future.

We look forward to continuing our strong presence at CLEO with new exciting developments and activities next year in Baltimore. We hope to see you there!
