Students attend Science Policy Workshop in D.C.
By Arjun Vijayakumar, MIRTHE Graduate Student, Princeton
The 'Consortium for Science, Policy and Outcomes' workshop in D.C was very successful. It gave a deep insight and hands on feel for how various agencies, academies and the Government work and interact on science policies. We got the opportunity to visit NSF and work on a mock grants review panel. We obtained insight into the working of congressional office. We were also part of the focus group discussing climate change at the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
The workshop also taught us effective presentation and communication skills. There were different group discussions with experts on fields such as Intellectual property, Nanotechnology, Entrepreneurship, Health policy etc. We also interacted with scientists from Congressional Research Service, AAAS, Ecological Society of America, EPA and Department of Defense. Another focus of the workshop was to highlight how media, museums and theater play a big role in communicating the greatness of science and technology to the general public.
The workshop had 14 attendees (13 PhD students from Science and Engineering and 1 professor Social Science) from Colorado School of mines, RPI, University of Michigan, CCNY, ASU and Princeton. It gave MIRTHE students an excellent chance to network with students from different backgrounds sharing the same goal of furthering science in policy work. It was fun, useful and rewarding.
